Maria Yannakaki is a human rights activist. She was elected as Member of Parliament with Democratic Left (Dimokratiki Aristera) in 2012, and resigned her seat in 2014 to run for Regional Governor of Attica. She was elected Regional Counsilor with Democratic Left. In 2014, she was elected General Rapporteur on combating racism and intolerance for the Council of Europe. In 2015, she resigned from Democratic Left, and in 2016 she was appointed General Secretary of Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice, in the SYRIZA/ANEL coalition government.
